At the same time, I was reviewing technical information from Nike’s Sport Research Lab for a lightweight, aggressive, low-profile basketball shoe. Inspired by the muscular futuristic figures of illustrator Birnth Hogarth, and by studies of simplistic, futuristic concept bicycles, I took up the challenge of designing the simple, muscular, lightweight product. Starting from the ground up, I used a high-traction rubber compound in the outsole together with a multidirectional herringbone design as the base. The recently completed advanced Air Technology from Nike’s Advanced Product Engineering Group provided exceptional cushioning, responsiveness and light weight, I encapsulated this cushioning module in a unique high-wrap, compression-molded EVA foam midsole. The high wrap of the midsole created a lightweight shell around the foot for superior support and stability. To further enhance the product’s structural integrity and light weight, molded urethane fabric weave inserts in the midsole helped to lock in the heel and provide exceptional arch and forefoot support. I researched numerous fit and dynamic tests of previous basketball shoe designs to build on past successes, if applicable. After testing several new materials, I hoped to use carbon fiber in the fabric weave inserts and plate but found this was not feasible due to manufacturing constraints. Professional and recreational athletes tested early stages of the design, and their technical feedback helped fine tune it. Throughout the design stages, the minimalistic approach remained relatively unchanged. With the appropriate technologies and materials incorporated the Air Zoom Flight basketball shoe that not only protects and cushions NBA superstars and has sold faster at the retail level than any basketball shoe in Nike’s history.
